Delta Police Demote Two Officers Over Viral Video Extortion Case

The Delta State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has taken decisive action against two of its officers following an orderly room trial. Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, attached to 'C' Division, Asaba, faced disciplinary measures after being implicated in a widely circulated video. The footage, captured on January 13, 2026, showed the officers allegedly extorting money from a motorist using a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal directly within the police station premises.
The internal investigation found both officers guilty of multiple offenses under the Police Act 2020, including extortion, discreditable conduct, and disregard for lawful directives. Consequently, CP Oyeniyi approved their demotion: Inspector Jeremiah was reduced to the rank of Sergeant, while Corporal Ehirim was lowered to Constable.
CP Oyeniyi emphasized the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu's, strict directive against the use of POS terminals or any electronic payment methods within police facilities nationwide. He issued a stern warning that no police personnel is permitted to solicit or accept money from the public under any circumstances, vowing that any officer found in breach of this order would face severe disciplinary actions.
The Commissioner further called upon all officers and men within the Command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect for citizens' rights. He highlighted that the recent disciplinary action serves as a strong warning, reaffirming the Command's dedication to maintaining discipline, accountability, and public trust. Members of the public are encouraged to report instances of police misconduct via the Complaint Response Unit at 09155570008 and 09011112311.
