Micheal Ward of Top Boy Fame Denies Car Rape, Claims Consensual Encounter

Bafta-winning actor Micheal Ward, renowned for his role in 'Top Boy', has appeared before Snaresbrook Crown Court to refute accusations of raping a woman inside a vehicle, asserting that their interaction was entirely consensual and enjoyable for both parties. Ward, aged 28, is facing two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault, all stemming from an alleged incident in January 2023. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The alleged encounter took place in his friend's Mercedes-Benz following a New Year's Day party at a club in Gants Hill, London. Ward, who resides in Silvertown, London, informed the court that he and the woman had engaged in 'flirtatious' conversation earlier. He detailed a sequence of events including foreplay, 'passionate' kissing, and maintained that no intimate act would have occurred had the woman not been willing. Ward described the complainant, whose identity remains protected by law, as an 'active participant' whom he believed had given full consent.
During cross-examination by defence counsel Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC, Ward was asked directly if he raped or sexually assaulted the woman in January 2023. To each question, he firmly responded, 'No miss, I did not.' He elaborated, stating, 'We had a mutual attraction with each other. We engaged in consensual s£x, had a great time, and she was actively participating in what we were doing all the time.'
Ward recounted hosting the New Year's party in Gants Hill, East London, after spending Christmas with his family. He found the woman 'very cute' upon first seeing her outside the venue with friends, initiating a 'flirty conversation' and exchanging Snapchat details. He told the jury, 'I could tell there was interest there – from her eye contact and the way she was speaking.' He recalled seeing her 'once or twice' at the party, describing the atmosphere as 'great' and their conversation as 'nice' and 'flirty', giving him a 'great vibe'.
The court heard that the woman later messaged Ward, indicating she was waiting by a car and had 'enjoyed the party'. After a 'very light' and 'very cool' conversation, Ward invited her into a car. He described the subsequent events in the vehicle as a 'continuation of the flirting', stating, 'She was touching me and I was touching her. She was rubbing my leg when we were kissing. She kept her arms around me, and it was a developing situation.' He added, 'She was reciprocating the energy. She was pulling me close. For me, that was an inviting act, and we were both enjoying that moment.'
Following the initial encounter, Ward expressed a desire to see her again, noting he 'enjoyed' their connection and found her 'cool'. He claimed the woman was 'smiling' but had to wait as he confirmed details for an afterparty in Stratford, East London, which he invited her to. Later, as they left the afterparty, Ward asked her to join him in a car to chat. They sat in the front of his friend's Mercedes-Benz, where Ward observed the woman seemed 'absolutely fine' during their 'nice and engaging general conversation'.
The pair then shared kisses and physical contact, which Ward described as 'very much passionate. She was enjoying it. I was enjoying it.' He then suggested moving to the back seat, which the woman did. Ward asserted she gave no indication of wanting to leave, and the car door remained unlocked. He claimed they kissed again before the situation 'developed'. 'I really feel that she wanted to be there. She never mentioned anything about wanting to leave,' he stated. He recalled her mentioning her friends were waiting but maintained that 'there was foreplay that happened. Everything was comfortable, and it progressed in a comfortable way.' He added, 'Everything was progressing in a natural hot way, and we were just enjoying it. She was actively participating in everything we were doing.' When asked by his lawyer if the woman did anything to indicate she did not want what transpired, Ward replied, 'No miss, if she did we would not have done it.' He concluded that he did not force her, and they shared kisses, hugs, and conversation before she departed. He expressed a wish to see her again, but cited a busy work schedule.
Messages exchanged later included Ward sending a smiling emoji with a heart, implying he would miss her, to which the woman responded, telling him to enjoy the rest of his night.
In contrast, a police interview with the alleged victim, played at a previous hearing, revealed her description of Ward as 'overpowering'. She stated, 'I tried to leave the vehicle and he told me to close the door.' Jurors heard that Ward then made attempts to engage her in a sexual act, which she said lasted 'no more than three minutes' on the first occasion. The woman recounted feeling 'numb' and 'scared', desperate for the incident to end. She claimed Ward then forced her into a second sexual act, allegedly threatening her with the words: 'If I tell you to do it, you do it.' The complainant testified, 'When he told me to do it again I didn't really feel I had a choice,' and 'He said, "if you are quick you can go".' She added, 'I didn't want to do it.' When asked about her emotional state, the woman said, 'I was just scared. I was just ready to leave the situation, and I felt at that point I knew I could go because he got what he wanted.'
Ward was arrested on January 18, 2023, and provided a prepared statement to the police denying the rape allegation, stating, 'I want to put on record that we had consensual foreplay and consensual sex.' He was subsequently charged on July 25, 2025. The trial is ongoing.
