The Abia State Police Command has confirmed that 35-year-old Nwoko Gift, an indigene of Imo State, will face charges of attempted murder. This development follows her apprehension in connection with a widely circulated video showing her allegedly assaulting her 12-year-old niece, Miss Ebo Chimamanda, with a kitchen knife.

DSP Maureen Chianaka, the spokesperson for the command, disclosed the arrest to journalists in a press statement. Preliminary investigations indicate that on July 5, Nwoko Gift, who resides at IBB Housing Estate in Umuahia, allegedly attempted to take the young girl's life. The reported motive behind the severe assault was the victim's failure to hang clothes to dry before the suspect departed for the market.

Further police reports have brought to light a pattern of domestic abuse, suggesting that the suspect had previously subjected the young girl to beatings and issued threats against her life on multiple occasions.

Following actionable intelligence, operatives from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters in Umuahia were deployed to the scene. The police team successfully rescued Miss Chimamanda, apprehended Nwoko Gift, and recovered the kitchen knife reportedly used during the assault.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation. Nwoko Gift remains in police custody and is expected to be formally arraigned in court once the inquiry is concluded.
