In a shocking turn of events, a Federal High Court in Lagos heard the testimony of Police Inspector Odunayo Oloye, who recounted the discovery of Augusta Onuwagbagbe's decomposing body at her boyfriend's residence. The 21-year-old's body was found inside the home of Benjamin Best Nnayereugo, popularly known as Killaboi, in the Ajah area of Lagos. According to Inspector Oloye, her involvement in the case began on July 15, 2023, when Augusta's mother, Cecilia Onuwagbagbe, reported that her daughter had gone missing after a disagreement with her boyfriend. Cecilia had intervened in the dispute but subsequently lost contact with both Augusta and Nnayereugo. The witness stated that Cecilia's efforts to reach them were unsuccessful, prompting her to contact Augusta's roommate, who directed her to Nnayereugo's residence at Oral Estate in Ajah. Upon arrival, Cecilia noticed her daughter's vehicle parked at the residence and reported the matter to the Ajah Police Station. Inspector Oloye, who was detailed as the Investigating Police Officer, accompanied Cecilia and her brother to the estate, where they met with the estate's security personnel. Upon entering the premises, Oloye noticed an open window and a foul odor emanating from the upstairs corridor. She climbed a ladder and peered through the window, where she saw the lifeless body of a lady, later identified as Augusta. The inspector then requested that Augusta's uncle climb the ladder to confirm the discovery, instructing him not to shout and to simply inform her of what he saw. After confirming the body's presence, Oloye advised Augusta's uncle to take his sister and friend home and manage the situation. The witness later returned to the station to brief her Divisional Police Officer and revisited the scene with the DPO and a patrol team to evacuate the body. During the evacuation, a handwritten note and a pen were recovered, which Oloye read and discovered was related to the case. The note was subsequently admitted into evidence as Exhibits P5 and P5A. The inspector also testified that Augusta's remains were deposited at the Yaba Mortuary, while investigations continued until the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department on July 18, 2023. When cross-examined, Oloye disagreed with the defense counsel's suggestion that another woman, Mrs. Bankole, had accompanied the group to the estate, maintaining that there were only three females present. She also insisted that she was the only police officer who initially accompanied the family and that she had climbed the ladder first to discover the body. The prosecution closed its case after Oloye's testimony, and the matter was adjourned until July 8 and 9, 2026, for continuation of the trial.
