A daring late-night attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, located in Kuru, near Jos in Plateau State, has resulted in the loss of three security operatives. The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 11:40 p.m. when gunmen stormed the institute, opening fire on security personnel stationed at the main gate. The ensuing exchange of gunfire successfully prevented the attackers from gaining access to the premises, but unfortunately, three security operatives, including a policeman, lost their lives during the confrontation. An anonymous staff member described the scene, stating, 'I was sleeping when I heard gunshots. At first, I didn’t know what was happening, but when I came out, I realised the institute was under attack. It caused panic everywhere.' The attack triggered widespread panic within and around the facility, with residents of nearby communities reporting sustained gunfire that lasted several minutes. Security operatives were eventually reinforced, forcing the attackers to flee. The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that three security personnel lost their lives during the attack. 'The Plateau State Police Command wishes to confirm the incident involving security personnel on duty at NIPSS, Kuru. Regrettably, three security personnel lost their lives during the incident,' the statement said. The command added that security had been reinforced around the area and that normal activities had resumed. 'The situation is under control, and normal activities have resumed. Investigation is ongoing,' the command said. The management of NIPSS also confirmed the incident, noting that security agencies had commenced investigations and urged the public to rely only on official information. 'The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel. There is currently no threat to the safety of staff, participants, or facilities,' it stated. As Nigeria's premier policy think tank and training institute for senior public officials, the attack on NIPSS is a significant security concern. Security agencies are continuing investigations to determine those behind the assault and the motive for the attack.
