A poignant letter written by the daughter of a Nigerian military officer, who is among the 36 personnel facing court-martial for their alleged involvement in a plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu, has shed light on the emotional turmoil faced by the families of the detained soldiers. The handwritten note, which was obtained exclusively by SaharaReporters, is a touching expression of the young girl's fears and anxieties as she struggles to come to terms with her father's prolonged detention. In the letter, Khadija pours out her heart, expressing her deep-seated fears about her father's safety and wellbeing, as well as the emotional toll his absence has taken on their family. 'Honestly, I'm scared, deep down inside I'm really scared. What if you never come back? What if you left for good? What if you are not happy where you are?' she writes. The letter reveals that Khadija's mother is also struggling to cope with the situation, often breaking down in tears as she tries to stay strong for the sake of their children. According to Khadija, her father has been in detention for at least two months without any communication with the family, leaving them with more questions than answers. The family's plight has been further exacerbated by the lack of information regarding the detained officer's whereabouts and welfare. The letter emerges amid allegations of torture, starvation, and inhumane treatment against the detained military personnel. Wives of some of the accused officers have come forward, alleging that their husbands are suffering from severe health complications, including deteriorating eyesight, respiratory illnesses, and psychological trauma, due to the harsh conditions they are being subjected to in detention. The 36 military personnel are currently standing trial before a General Court-Martial on charges including conspiracy, mutiny, and failure to suppress mutiny, with the case generating significant controversy following allegations that the tribunal has prejudged the matter.
