Colorado Man Gets 26 Years for Kidnapping Good Samaritan

In a shocking turn of events, a man from Colorado has been handed a significant prison sentence for his involvement in a disturbing kidnapping incident. According to the Pueblo County District Attorney's Office, 29-year-old Shane McSwane pleaded guilty to charges of kidnapping and attempted aggravated robbery on June 12. As a result, he was immediately sentenced to two consecutive 13-year prison terms, with the requirement to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. This translates to McSwane spending at least 22.1 years behind bars. The incident that led to McSwane's sentencing occurred on May 25, 2025, when a woman named Grace Dotson stopped to assist him after witnessing a car crash in Aurora. However, McSwane took advantage of Dotson's kindness and forced his way into her vehicle, subsequently kidnapping her and driving erratically for four hours. During this time, Dotson was occasionally allowed to answer phone calls from her frantic family. The ordeal took a turn when McSwane stopped at a gas station in Colorado City, where he threatened to shoot a clerk while asking for a lighter. Fortunately, the authorities were able to track down the vehicle and apprehend McSwane after a high-speed pursuit. Both Dotson and the gas station clerk were unharmed, although the vehicle's owner alleged that McSwane had touched her inappropriately during the kidnapping. The Pueblo County DA's office expressed gratitude that Dotson is alive and commended the law enforcement partners for their dedication and heroic efforts in rescuing her.
