Oyo Abductions: Difficult Terrain Hampers Rescue Efforts - Governor Makinde

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has provided an update on the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities in Oriire Local Government Area. According to Makinde, the challenging terrain and vast expanse of the Old Oyo National Park are major obstacles to the rescue efforts. In his Newsletter No. 140, the governor revealed that intelligence reports indicate the abductees are still being held within the Old Oyo National Park axis, nearly four weeks after they were taken. The abduction occurred on May 15 when terrorists attacked the Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L A Primary School, Esiele, killing a teacher and abducting over 45 pupils and teachers. The governor acknowledged the distress and uncertainty faced by the families of the victims, stating that the state government and security agencies are working tirelessly to secure their release. Makinde emphasized that every credible lead is being pursued and every lawful measure is being deployed to ensure the safe return of the abductees. He noted that the size and difficult terrain of the Old Oyo National Park, which covers approximately 2,500 square kilometers across ten Local Government Areas, pose significant operational challenges for security personnel. The governor urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the state's toll-free Citizens Enquiry Number, 615, and cautioned against the circulation of unverified information regarding the abduction. Makinde appealed to residents to continue supporting security agencies with useful information and to keep the abducted students and teachers in their prayers as efforts intensify to secure their safe return.
