The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, has made significant progress in its investigation into the derailment of a train on the Warri-Itakpe rail line. According to a statement released by the bureau on Wednesday, investigators have retrieved crucial evidence and completed key on-site activities. The investigation, led by the NSIB Director-General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., commenced immediately after the incident occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026. Badeh, accompanied by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, and the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, conducted a thorough examination of the accident scene. The team documented the site, examined the affected rail equipment and infrastructure, gathered operational and technical information, and interviewed relevant personnel. The evidence collected, including witness interviews, operational records, and maintenance documentation, will undergo detailed analysis by the bureau's specialists. Speaking at the scene, Captain Badeh expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and passengers affected by the incident. He stated, 'Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families who have lost loved ones, those who sustained injuries, and every passenger affected by this tragic occurrence.' The NSIB Director-General also met with passengers affected by the derailment and commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives. He visited injured victims receiving treatment at various healthcare centers, offering words of comfort and reassurance. The bureau is working closely with relevant federal and state agencies throughout the investigation process. The purpose of the investigation is to establish the circumstances of the occurrence, identify causal and contributing factors, and determine measures to enhance rail transportation safety in Nigeria.
