Nigerian Girls Rescued from Human Trafficking Rings in West Africa

In a daring operation, seven Nigerian girls have been rescued from human trafficking networks operating in several West African countries, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Côte d’Ivoire. The rescue effort was undertaken by the Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organisation in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons. According to a statement issued by the President of the Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organisation, Prosper Michael, the survivors were received by Nigerian authorities upon their return to the country. The girls, who hail from Plateau, Cross River, and Edo States, recounted their ordeals, stating that they were lured into the trafficking networks with promises of legitimate employment opportunities abroad. However, upon arrival in the respective countries, they were forced into prostitution and subjected to exploitation. One of the survivors, 22-year-old Sandy Sophia from Plateau State, revealed that she was deceived into travelling to Burkina Faso with the promise of a decent job, only to discover that it was a prostitution racket. Another survivor, 19-year-old Rose, a graduate of Plateau State Polytechnic, stated that she was promised a job in a boutique but ended up being forced into commercial sex work. The victims claimed that they were threatened and intimidated whenever they resisted or requested to return home. The rescue operation was facilitated by the Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organisation following a request from the Benin Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons. The organisation has reiterated its commitment to combating human trafficking and supporting vulnerable Nigerians trapped in exploitation networks across Africa and beyond. The survivors have appealed for intensified efforts to dismantle trafficking networks operating within and outside Nigeria, while the organisation has urged young Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad to verify job offers and migration arrangements thoroughly before travelling.
