In a dramatic turn of events, Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of renowned movie director Rob Reiner, has petitioned the court for access to his inheritance. Currently facing trial for the alleged murder of his parents, Nick claims that the trustee of his trust, Paul Kanin, has been stalling the release of funds that were meant for him. According to court documents, Nick was supposed to receive half of the $1.5 million set aside for him in a trust when he turned 30, with the remaining half to be disbursed when he turns 35. However, Nick alleges that Kanin has been making excuses and raising unsubstantiated concerns about his competence to manage the trust, thereby withholding the funds. This development has caused Nick significant distress, particularly as he tries to secure the services of a top-notch defense lawyer, Alan Jackson, to handle his murder case. Kanin's refusal to pay Jackson's fees led to the lawyer's withdrawal from the case, leaving Nick with no choice but to rely on a public defender. In his petition, Nick stresses that time is of the essence and that every additional week of delay in accessing the funds prejudices his defense. Nick's lawyers argue that the harm caused by Kanin's actions is irreparable and grows with each passing day. The petition also accuses Kanin of depleting Nick's funds by paying other lawyers to raise objections to the release of the money. Nick is currently being represented by Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene, who has entered a not guilty plea on his behalf to six felony charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of special circumstances involving multiple murder. The prosecution alleges that Nick killed his parents at their $13.5 million home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, on December 14, before fleeing the scene.
