This development comes after an unnamed benefactor stepped forward to pay the fine imposed on Adeyeye by a Federal High Court in Lagos. Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, confirmed Adeyeye's release in a post on social media, expressing relief that the social media user had regained his freedom.

Adeyeye was initially arrested, prosecuted, and convicted on charges related to cyberstalking, cyberbullying, and the dissemination of false and malicious information. The case stemmed from social media posts involving the daughter of popular Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold and his wife, Simi. Court documents revealed that Adeyeye was arraigned on May 14 and later pleaded guilty to the charges, receiving a sentence that included an option of fine.
