Ed Sheeran Offers Heartfelt Apology, Addresses Mideast Strife at Philly Gig

British music star Ed Sheeran recently spoke out about the controversy surrounding the removal of rapper Macklemore from his U.S. tour, delivering an emotional address to fans in Philadelphia. During his performance at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday, September 19, Sheeran publicly acknowledged the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, marking his first concert since Macklemore was dropped from the remaining U.S. dates of his "Loop Tour" following the rapper's pro-Palestinian comments.

Addressing the audience, Sheeran admitted his prior hesitation to engage in political activism, but noted that the recent events had inadvertently placed him at the heart of a significant debate concerning freedom of expression. He stated, “I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet. My concerts have always been a safe space for everyone, and that matters hugely to me. Honoring my commitment to my fans is also completely essential to who I am, and that is why I’m here tonight on my own and continuing my current tour.”

The "Shape of You" singer also offered an apology for the way the controversy had developed, telling fans he was “so, so sorry” and acknowledging his missteps in managing the situation. Pertaining to the broader conflict, Sheeran labeled the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack on Israel as “horrific.” He further characterized the subsequent situation in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate,” adding, “My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilian lives, of children’s lives.” He also voiced apprehension regarding what he termed “systemic injustice” in the West Bank.

Macklemore’s removal from the remaining U.S. stops on Sheeran’s tour came after he made pro-Palestinian statements, including chanting “Free Palestine,” during an earlier show at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Macklemore has since claimed that Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and whose company owns Gillette Stadium, objected to his participation and was instrumental in the pressure from venues that led to his eventual removal. Kraft, however, has defended his stance against Macklemore’s involvement, citing the rapper’s alleged history of “antisemitic rhetoric and imagery.”

Sheeran clarified that the ultimate decision to remove Macklemore was not his, explaining that the rapper’s contract was with the tour promoter, and several stadium operators had expressed objections to Macklemore’s continued presence. In solidarity with Macklemore, other supporting acts subsequently pulled out of the tour, leaving Sheeran to perform the Philadelphia concert without an opening act. Sheeran mentioned spending the week engaging with various venues to resolve the disagreement and also voiced his apprehension about venues seeking prior approval for what performers can say on stage.

Prior to Saturday’s concert, pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside Lincoln Financial Field, with the Philadelphia Police Department confirming they were monitoring the situation for public safety. The controversy also prompted some ticket holders to request refunds, though many still attended the concert despite the ongoing dispute. Sheeran concluded his address to the Philadelphia audience by expressing his desire for his concerts to remain spaces where individuals with differing perspectives could converge, reiterating that his music aims to foster love, hope, and unity.
