Sophia Momodu Discusses Stigma of Unwed Pregnancy with Davido, Recalls Mockery at UNGA

Internet personality Sophia Momodu recently shared her personal journey of becoming pregnant outside of marriage with the renowned singer, Davido. Speaking at Colombia University, an event preceding the United Nations General Assembly High-level week, Momodu revealed that the experience subjected her to significant public ridicule and left her feeling voiceless, despite her public profile.

She emphasized the particular difficulty of her situation, being a pastor's daughter who had a child out of wedlock, citing the profound stigma associated with such circumstances in Nigeria. Momodu articulated her ordeal, stating, “I am a pastor’s daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar. And I was mocked. It was crazy. And I had to find my strength in the midst of all of that. And for the longest time, I didn't have a voice. I was famous, I was popular, but I didn't have a voice.”

Momodu further explained that the intense negativity surrounding her story often overshadowed her own narrative, expressing her desire for a more empathetic understanding of her experience. She also recounted how an aunt had advised her to keep silent on the matter, viewing it as a sensitive topic that Black women were not expected to discuss publicly. However, by sharing her story on various international platforms, Momodu discovered a sense of solidarity, as numerous women reached out to her with similar personal accounts, making her realize she was not alone.
