Following a two-week judicial proceeding, a verdict has been delivered against American singer Chris Brown, mandating him to pay a substantial sum after his former housekeeper was severely injured by his dog. Maria Avila, the plaintiff, was brutally attacked by Hades, a 200-pound Caucasian shepherd belonging to Brown, while she was disposing of refuse outside his residence in Tarzana, California.

According to Michael C. Murphy Jr., Avila's legal representative, Brown and his corporate entity, Black Pyramid LLC, are obligated to compensate Maria Avila with $12.9 million due to negligence. This sum is part of a larger payout. Patricia Avila, Maria's sister, who was also present during the incident, received an award of $885,000 for emotional distress. Furthermore, Maria Avila's husband, Oscar Olivo, was separately awarded $50,000.

Murphy expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, "After more than five years of litigating against Chris Brown, we are thrilled that we were able to get justice for our client, Patricia. We are so happy for her and her family after everything they went through on that horrible day. It was an honor to represent her."

Brown had contended that the dog was maintained strictly for security purposes and was not a personal pet. However, the jury's decision might have been influenced by testimonies indicating that Brown, instead of contacting emergency services or assisting Avila post-attack, reportedly fled the scene, which was described as blood-soaked. He allegedly spent several hours driving around, leaving his employees to call 911 and provide help to Avila. Brown justified his actions by stating he feared his involvement would trigger a "media circus" if his voice was heard on the 911 call or if he was present upon the arrival of law enforcement.

Before the trial commenced, the singer had acknowledged some degree of culpability. Nevertheless, he testified in court that he had previously cautioned Avila and her sister about the dogs, instructing them to only venture outside when accompanied by security personnel. The two housekeepers refuted having any such conversation with Brown, citing language barriers as a reason why such a discussion would have been improbable. This judgment comes just four days after Brown embarked on a co-headlining tour with Usher, which is scheduled to play in stadiums across the United States this summer.
