Kano Phone Sellers Confront Chinese Nationals Over Direct Sales, Price Undercutting

Full Story
Mobile phone merchants in Kano State have reportedly taken action against Chinese citizens, accusing them of engaging in direct sales of devices to consumers at prices said to be significantly lower than what local vendors offer. A video circulating widely on social media captures the moment these traders, who identify as members of a recognized association, voiced their strong objections. They contended that foreign nationals lack the authorization to bypass local distributors and sell directly to the public, especially when their pricing undercuts established market rates.
This development mirrors a similar controversy that erupted weeks prior in Lagos, where Igbo traders had protested against analogous business practices by Chinese individuals. The Lagos incident had drawn comments from several notable Nigerian personalities, including Lere Olayinka and Dotun, among others. However, these same public figures have yet to issue any statement regarding the recently reported confrontation in Kano.
