Festus Keyamo to Lead AfDB's $7 Billion Aviation Initiative for Africa

Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has been designated as the African Champion for the African Development Bank's (AfDB) ambitious $7 billion Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme for Africa (IATP). This significant appointment, confirmed in a statement released Wednesday from Brazzaville, Congo, acknowledges Nigeria's "leadership and vision" in spearheading policy reforms aimed at revitalising its aviation sector.
In this new capacity, Minister Keyamo is tasked with driving the implementation and widespread promotion of the IATP across the entire African continent. The AfDB has also extended an invitation to him to attend its Annual Meeting, scheduled for May 28, 2026, in Brazzaville. During this event, a formal Letter of Intent (LOI) between the bank and Nigeria is expected to be signed.
The IATP, as outlined by the bank, represents a continent-wide effort designed to upgrade Africa's aviation infrastructure and operations. It aims to attract substantial private, institutional, and concessional capital into the industry. The programme seeks to rejuvenate Africa's air travel sector, which currently accounts for less than three percent of global air traffic, despite the continent being home to nearly 18 percent of the world's population, a disparity the AfDB highlighted.
The statement further emphasised, "The Aviation Minister is now expected to bring his knowledge, commitment and passion to drive this program in the whole of Africa." The bank also conveyed its gratitude to Keyamo, commending his dedication to fostering aviation development throughout Africa.
This appointment coincides with ongoing reform efforts within Nigeria's aviation landscape. These initiatives include upgrades to airport facilities, strengthening the operational capabilities of airlines, attracting vital investments, and strategically positioning Nigeria as a prominent regional aviation hub.
