Despite 18 Major Incidents, LASEMA Reports No Fatalities in Lagos

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has announced its successful handling of 18 significant emergency situations across the state between June 14 and June 21, with a commendable record of zero fatalities. This information was released in a statement on Sunday by the agency's spokesperson, Afolabi Olawale.
Olawale detailed that the incidents encompassed a variety of emergencies, including road traffic collisions, fire outbreaks, container truck mishaps, tanker-related crises, and structural failures. Emergency response teams were dispatched to critical areas such as Obanikoro, Maryland, Okota, Mushin, Marina, Otedola, Ikeja Underbridge, and along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway during this period.
Out of the 18 incidents, no lives were lost in 17. A notable rescue operation involved a victim trapped in a 40-foot container accident at Maryland Roundabout on June 18. The individual was successfully extricated alive and transported to Gbagada Orthopaedic Hospital for necessary medical attention.
LASEMA's various units, including Cobra, Eagle, Sharks, and the Lagos Response Team, collaborated effectively with several other agencies. These partners included the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and community stakeholders, all working in unison to manage these emergencies.
The agency's statement partly read, “LASEMA has reaffirmed its position as West Africa’s benchmark for urban emergency coordination following the successful management of 18 high-risk incidents across the state between Friday, June 14 and Saturday, June 21, 2026. No loss of life was recorded in 17 of the 18 incidents. One victim trapped in a 40-ft container accident at Maryland Roundabout on June 18 was extricated alive, stabilised by LRU paramedics and transferred to Gbagada Orthopaedic Hospital for advanced care.”
Among the specific incidents, Olawale highlighted a fire at a factory owned by COPACI Nigeria Limited in Okota on June 15, which was swiftly contained, preventing its spread to adjacent warehouses. Another fire, involving a Mercedes-Benz vehicle at the Polaris Bank premises in Marina, was also put out through a well-coordinated response by multiple emergency services.
Heavy-duty recovery equipment and cranes were crucial in clearing road obstructions and ensuring smooth traffic flow on key routes like Challenge-Mushin, Obanikoro-Maryland, Otedola Bridge, and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, attributed these positive outcomes to the state government's continuous investment in emergency response infrastructure, personnel training, and equipment. He stated, “The consistency of zero-fatality outcomes across high-risk incidents in one week is not accidental. It is the product of deliberate investment in standards, training and equipment under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda.” He also affirmed that emergency responders adhered to international operational standards.
LASEMA urged Lagos residents to utilize its toll-free emergency lines for prompt reporting of incidents and advised motorists to prioritize proper vehicle maintenance and strict adherence to traffic regulations. Olawale further committed to ongoing collaboration with relevant agencies to tackle factors contributing to emergencies, such as deteriorated road sections and aging infrastructure.
This report follows PUNCH Online's earlier disclosure that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) rescued 353 road crash victims and individuals involved in similar emergencies across the state between January and May 2026. This figure underscores the increasing demands on emergency responders and the critical importance of timely intervention in reducing fatalities on Lagos roads, particularly during the current rainy season.
