Nigeria Customs Service Foils Major Smuggling Operation, Seizes 3,310 Jerrycans of Foreign Vegetable Oil

The Nigeria Customs Service has dealt a significant blow to smugglers with the interception of a large consignment of foreign vegetable oil. According to the Comptroller of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone C, Owerri, Mr Bishir Balogun, the unit's officers successfully seized 3,310 jerry cans of 25-litre 'Super Delicious' vegetable oil, 10 jerry cans of 10-litre 'Super Delicious' vegetable oil, 20 cartons of five-litre sunflower vegetable oil, and 20 cartons of three-litre sunflower vegetable oil. This major seizure was made possible through the unit's strategic intelligence gathering and coordinated enforcement operations. Mr Balogun described the seizure as a significant setback for smugglers, whose activities have far-reaching negative consequences, including undermining local manufacturing, hindering technology transfer, reducing employment opportunities, and affecting foreign exchange earnings. The comptroller emphasized that the operation demonstrates the Nigeria Customs Service's commitment to enforcing the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2022 (as amended), as well as the Federal Government's fiscal and trade policies prohibiting the importation of foreign vegetable oil. He warned individuals involved in smuggling and other illicit trade activities to desist, stressing that the service would continue to intensify enforcement operations across its areas of responsibility. The seized products are currently in the custody of the service, pending the conclusion of investigations and the commencement of appropriate legal action. The Nigeria Customs Service has reiterated its resolve to curb smuggling and protect legitimate businesses operating within the country's regulatory framework.
