Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: LASG Declares Two-Week Kara Bridge Repair Diversion

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has issued a public notice, alerting motorists to an impending partial traffic disruption on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. This comes as rehabilitation work on the bridge's expansion joint is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

According to a release from the Ministry of Transportation, the Federal Ministry of Works will be undertaking these crucial repairs, which are projected to span a period of two weeks. To ensure a secure environment for engineers carrying out the work, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily narrowed to two lanes. This lane reduction will affect a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the bridge.

The Ministry anticipates that this temporary lane closure will lead to moderate traffic congestion, particularly around the Fatgbems Turn. It is expected that some drivers might opt to make U-turns or seek alternative routes to bypass potential delays. The statement from the ministry reiterated, “To facilitate the repair works, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to provide a safe work zone.”

However, the LASG reassured commuters heading towards Ibadan, beyond the Fatgbems Turn, that their movement should experience minimal to no interruptions throughout the repair duration. Motorists are strongly advised to plan their journeys in advance, explore alternative routes where feasible, strictly adhere to traffic regulations, and cooperate fully with the traffic management personnel deployed along the corridor to facilitate smoother traffic flow. The ministry also appealed for public understanding, emphasizing that these rehabilitation efforts are essential for enhancing the safety and longevity of Kara Bridge, ultimately benefiting all road users.
