In a significant move to bolster security, Russian President Vladimir Putin has imposed stringent restrictions on a vast section of Moscow's airspace. The restrictions, which affect private planes and helicopters, are reportedly a response to escalating concerns over potential assassination attempts and the growing threat of Ukrainian drone activity near the Russian capital. This no-fly zone, extending up to 16,700 feet, covers an expansive area roughly four times the size of the United Kingdom, stretching from the Belarus border through areas near St Petersburg and toward the Urals, and connecting with already restricted southern airspace close to the war zone. According to reports, Russian authorities are updating air defence systems around the capital and high-security zones, including areas near Putin's residence, as a precautionary measure. The decision to restrict airspace is driven by risk assessments involving drones and unauthorized aircraft activity, although officials have not publicly confirmed that the move is specifically linked to assassination threats. Private aircraft movements in the region are set to be heavily restricted, with flight training and civilian pilot schools also banned within the zone. However, private jets used by approved individuals may still be allowed to operate. The restrictions come at a time of heightened political tension inside Russia, with reports of underground anti-government groups and ongoing fears within the Kremlin about internal instability and external attacks. As the situation continues to unfold, officials are expected to issue formal aviation notices soon, outlining the specifics of the new restrictions.
