The long-standing dispute over the Falkland Islands has resurfaced following Argentina's display of a banner claiming the territory after their World Cup semi-final win over England. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has weighed in on the issue, stating that the Falkland Islands are 'British' and that Argentina is using football to make a political statement. This comes as FIFA's independent disciplinary committee is reviewing the incident to determine if Argentina breached rules against displaying political messages on the field. The UK government, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has maintained that the Falklands' status is not up for debate, with Business Minister Peter Kyle describing the banner display as an 'egregious violation' of FIFA rules. Badenoch, in a video posted on X, emphasized that the Conservatives will always defend the Falklands, criticizing Argentina for politicizing football. The Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, have been at the center of competing claims between Britain and Argentina for decades, culminating in the 1982 Falklands War. A similar incident occurred in 2014 when the Argentine Football Association was fined for displaying the same banner before an international friendly against Slovenia. Badenoch also took the opportunity to criticize the Labour government over its agreement regarding the Chagos Islands, arguing that the Conservatives would never take a similar approach to the Falklands. Argentina's President Javier Milei has defended the display, calling it 'perfectly valid and legitimate,' while the country awaits FIFA's decision on the matter. The incident has sparked tensions, with Argentina's vice president, Victoria Villarruel, referring to the English as 'usurping pirates' and the country's Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno filing a formal protest over a British warship near the Falkland Islands.
