Senegal National Team Parts Ways with Coach Pape Thiaw Post-World Cup

The Senegalese national football team has officially dismissed its head coach, Pape Thiaw, following their elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Round of 32 stage. Thiaw, who took the helm in December 2024, oversaw a campaign where the Teranga Lions faced early setbacks, losing their initial two Group I fixtures to formidable opponents France and Norway. However, a decisive 5-0 triumph against Iran secured their progression as one of the highest-ranked third-placed teams.
Their journey in the knockout phase ended dramatically in Seattle against Belgium. Senegal had established a commanding 2-0 lead with just five minutes remaining in the Round of 32 clash. Yet, they conceded two quick goals, allowing Belgium to equalize. The match proceeded into extra-time, where a late penalty converted by Youri Tielemans sealed a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat for the West African side.
The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) confirmed the decision to relieve Thiaw and his entire technical crew of their duties. A statement released by the federation on Saturday, July 11, 2026, elaborated on the move: "The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) informs the public that following the meeting of the Executive Committee held this Saturday, July 11 2026, it was decided to initiate a procedure to terminate the functions of the national coach, Mr Pape Thiaw, as well as his entire technical staff." The statement further clarified, "This decision comes after the elimination of the Senegal national team in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After a thorough evaluation of the sporting results and prospects of the national team, the Executive Committee deemed it necessary to initiate this procedure in the best interests of Senegalese football." This evaluation led the FSF's Executive Committee to conclude that a change was necessary for the future of Senegalese football.
