Manchester United is reportedly on the verge of finalizing a deal to bring seasoned goalkeeper Karl Darlow to Old Trafford on a free transfer. While minor details are still being ironed out, the Red Devils are in advanced discussions to secure the 35-year-old’s services.

The move aims to bolster the goalkeeping department, providing crucial support for current first-choice Senne Lammens, especially with Altay Bayindir anticipated to depart. Last month, The Athletic had indicated United’s interest in Darlow, who became a free agent after his contract with Leeds United expired this summer. This transfer would place him in an exclusive group of players, including Rio Ferdinand, Gordon McQueen, and Alan Smith, who have made the switch from Elland Road to Old Trafford.

Everton had also explored the possibility of signing the 15-time Wales international. Another option considered by United was Sam Johnstone, 33, who began his career at the club's academy and currently has two years left on his Wolverhampton Wanderers contract.

United’s search focused on an experienced goalkeeper with Premier League background and homegrown status, someone who could mentor Lammens and provide rotation, particularly with the club competing in the Champions League next season. Darlow precisely fits this profile.

During the 2025-26 season at Leeds, Darlow successfully displaced summer signing Lucas Perri as the club's primary goalkeeper. He started every game from mid-January until the season's conclusion, during which Leeds suffered only four defeats in 17 matches, ultimately securing their Premier League status with a 14th-place finish.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke explained his decision to switch goalkeepers in January, stating he felt the need to remove Perri “out of the spotlight” as the player had “perhaps not delivered, performance-wise, what we were expecting.” Farke praised Darlow as a “very reliable, solid goalkeeper, who was fantastic for us last season,” referencing his seven starts in Leeds' successful run to clinch the Championship title in 2024-25.

Darlow has made 38 appearances for Leeds since joining them from Newcastle United in 2023 on a three-year deal. His career also includes 111 appearances for Nottingham Forest in his early days and 100 appearances during a nine-year stint at Newcastle.

Senne Lammens was established as United’s first-choice goalkeeper following his €21 million (£18.2m) move, plus €4 million in add-ons, from Royal Antwerp in September 2025. Andre Onana spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Trabzonspor and has since agreed to another loan spell with the Turkish club. Bayindir did not start ahead of Lammens after the Belgian’s arrival.

Elsewhere in the goalkeeping department, Radek Vitek, who was named Bristol City’s player of the year after an impressive loan, is attracting interest from several clubs and is expected to leave United either permanently or on loan for more playing time. Veteran Tom Heaton, 40, has inked a new one-year contract, offering valuable training support, while 23-year-old Dermot Mee recently signed a two-year extension and remains a key member of the team’s goalkeeper unit.
