US-Based Dr. Michael Taiwo Honours Nigerian STEM Olympiad Gold Winners with ₦1M

Dr. Michael Taiwo, a Nigerian hydrogen expert based in the United States, has presented a reward of ₦1 million to three Nigerian students who secured gold medals at the recent International STEM Olympiad held in Rome, Italy. This generous pledge was initially made by Taiwo on Tuesday via a post on X, following the announcement of the students' outstanding achievement by prominent education advocate, Alex Onyia, and has since been fulfilled.
Upon learning of the students' success through Onyia's X post, Dr. Taiwo expressed his admiration, stating, “This is an impressive achievement. Congratulations. I will be gifting these lads with 1M. Please DM me the bank details.” Prior to this, Onyia had revealed that the Nigerian contingent, comprising Chimdiebube Onwubiko, Don Anele Munachimso, and Egejurum Onyedikachi, collectively earned four gold medals during the prestigious competition.
The International STEM Olympiad, hosted at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, saw participation from over 150 nations worldwide. Onyia excitedly announced, “The wait is over. We have two golds: Chimdiebube Onwubiko and Don Anele Munachimso. We are the best in the world!” He quickly rectified an oversight in his initial statement, confirming that 11-year-old Egejurum Onyedikachi, who competed in the primary Mathematics division, also secured a gold medal, bringing the total to three individual golds. Furthermore, Anele had also won an additional medal in the Science category, making it four golds for the team.
In other news from the publication, reports indicated a Kwara community rejoiced over the return of abducted worshippers, Dangote initiated construction on a $17 billion refinery project in Kenya, and Vitafoam enhanced its customer interaction by launching a new comfort centre.
These three young scholars, aged 11, 13, and 17 respectively, earned their spot in the Rome grand finale by excelling in the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad. This regional contest, orchestrated by Onyia, attracted over 11,500 participants. Onyia played a pivotal role in their journey, personally funding their entire trip to Italy, which encompassed their registration fees, visa applications, flights, accommodation, and all other related expenditures.
Dr. Taiwo promptly fulfilled his commitment just hours after making the initial pledge. Innocent Chukwudubem, a community advocate for the ISEE education project, which is focused on the Southeast region, confirmed the payment on X, sharing a screenshot of the transaction. Chukwudubem's post read, “Promise made, promise kept. I am here to announce that Dr Michael Taiwo has fulfilled his promise of supporting the STEM Olympiad lads with the 1M. Doc na talk and do. Thank you sir. Thank you (Onyia) for your sacrifice and commitment to ISEE project.”
A Nigerian native, Dr. Taiwo is a chemical engineer by profession, holding a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arkansas. He currently serves as a senior hydrogen specialist at Shell USA, where his work is centered on clean energy solutions and carbon management. In 2019, he established the Michael Taiwo Scholarships, an initiative designed to assist academically brilliant but financially struggling students from developing nations in pursuing postgraduate education overseas. This program has garnered tens of thousands of applications and successfully facilitated the placement of hundreds of scholars into leading universities globally.
This remarkable achievement by the students arrives just weeks after education stakeholders revealed Nigeria's demotion to observer status for the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai, China. This downgrade was attributed to several years of non-competitive engagement, primarily due to persistent funding difficulties.
