Following Portugal's elimination from the World Cup by Spain, football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has stated he will not be making any hasty decisions regarding his professional future. This occurred after what he confirmed was his final appearance in the global tournament on Monday.

The 41-year-old Portuguese legend had already indicated this World Cup would be his last, a statement he made prior to the round-of-16 clash where his team suffered a 1-0 defeat. When questioned late on Monday night, June 6, about his next steps, Ronaldo responded, stating, “It was my last World Cup, yes, but I’ll have time to think about the rest, to be with my family, not make rash decisions, and just get on with life. That’s football, that’s the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and you have to move on.”

The prolific striker, who holds the record as the leading scorer in the annals of men’s international football, affirmed his departure from the World Cup arena would be “with a clear conscience.” He further elaborated, saying, “The truth is, the biggest title I won with the national team was in 2016 (Euros), which for me is just as significant as a World Cup, honestly. That’s why, I repeat, I’m leaving with a clear conscience, at my best, and that’s it. Tomorrow is a new day, and life goes on.”

While Ronaldo achieved European Championship success with Portugal in 2016, a World Cup victory has eluded him throughout his illustrious career. His best performance at the global tournament was reaching the semi-finals of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany, where Portugal ultimately secured fourth place.
