Mexico Unveils World Cup Squad: Ochoa Makes History, Berterame Left Out

The long-awaited Mexico World Cup squad has been announced, and it is a mix of experience and youth. Coach Javier 'Vasco' Aguirre revealed the 26-man squad in a social media video on Sunday night, which was narrated by the renowned Roberto Gomez Bolaños, also known as Chespirito. This added a touch of nostalgia to the announcement. The squad is built around a core of experienced players, including the veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who is set to become one of only three players to have attended six World Cups, alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Aguirre has also included some younger players who are expected to shape the future of the team. The coach admitted that not all the players are in the same physical condition, but he is confident that this is the best squad Mexico could have assembled. 'I have been with the team for 20 months, and in my judgment, this is the best we found,' Aguirre said. 'We are not bringing everyone in the same physical and athletic moment. We still have days to get them up to speed, but we will try to start fully ready on the 11th.' The squad has 12 players who were part of the 2022 World Cup team, which will provide a sense of continuity and experience. However, Aguirre has also given opportunities to some new players, including Gilberto Mora, Armando 'La Hormiga' Gonzalez, Obed Vargas, Brian Gutierrez, and Mateo Chavez. This blend of experience and youth will be crucial as Mexico prepares to host the World Cup on June 11. The announcement has also sparked debate about the players who were left out, including Inter Miami star German Berterame. Despite the challenges ahead, Aguirre is confident that his squad has what it takes to succeed in the tournament.
