Omoyele Sowore Returns to Nigeria, Reignites 2027 Presidential Campaign

Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, has officially returned to Nigeria from the United States, signalling the commencement of his 2027 presidential campaign. Sowore confirmed his arrival in a statement released to journalists on Sunday, expressing profound joy at reuniting with his family and country after an absence of over 20 months.

He clarified that his departure for the US was necessitated by what he termed a series of arrests, detentions, travel restrictions, and the confiscation of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies. During his time abroad, Sowore actively engaged with Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists, and other key stakeholders, discussing the prevailing conditions in Nigeria and outlining his political agenda. His activities also included participation in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued advocacy for voting rights for Nigerians residing overseas.

The AAC presidential hopeful reiterated his unwavering commitment to ensuring the active involvement of Nigerians in the nation's democratic processes. He further stated that an AAC administration, if elected in 2027, would prioritize the implementation of diaspora voting. Sowore's itinerary indicated his expected arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, from where he would proceed to Abuja. He also confirmed his intention to continue attending court sessions related to the cybercrime case initiated against him by the Department of State Services (DSS) in 2025.

According to Sowore, his return marks a fresh phase in his nationwide campaign efforts leading up to the 2027 presidential election. He articulated plans to connect with various segments of society, including workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals, and communities across the country. These engagements, he explained, would delve into the political, social, and economic issues central to the AAC's 2027 agenda. The campaign aims to galvanize Nigerians around crucial themes such as equal rights, justice, peace, security, and economic development.

Sowore emphasized that the 2027 election presents a pivotal moment for Nigerians to determine the future trajectory of the country’s political leadership. He affirmed, "My campaign will continue to advocate fundamental political, social and economic transformation." The AAC candidate stressed his dedication to delivering his message directly to citizens nationwide, stating, "I will continue the campaign and engagements with Nigerians as the 2027 election approached."
