Enugu Local Government Poll: Apathy, Distrust Keep Voters Home

Saturday's local government elections across Enugu State were characterized by a notably low voter turnout, with many residents attributing their absence to widespread apathy, insufficient public awareness, and disillusionment stemming from previous electoral experiences. The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) oversaw the polls across the state's 17 local government areas, but reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) indicated delays in the distribution of electoral materials at various polling units.

Observations from parts of Enugu metropolis, specifically Trans-Ekulu and sections of New Haven, revealed only a handful of citizens casting their votes. Similarly, in Achara Layout and Awkunanaw, essential election materials arrived late. At Igbariam Primary School, security personnel and a few prospective voters were seen waiting for materials, while some youths at the same location passed the time by playing football.

This lack of participation persisted despite extensive campaigns by political parties and appeals from both ENSIEC and the state government for eligible voters to exercise their civic duty. Raphael Nnamani, a resident, informed NAN that his decision to boycott the election was deliberate, driven by a conviction that his vote would not be genuinely counted. He stated, “Everybody know the situation; whether you vote or not, the results have been written; so, why should I waste my time.”

Another resident, Margaret Ozioko, expressed her unawareness of the election and a general disinterest in Nigerian polls, saying, “I don’t have anything to do with election in Nigeria because after voting the vote will not count.” Peter Eze, a civil servant, pointed to inadequate public enlightenment, past electoral disappointments, and doubts about the actual impact of local government elections on residents' lives as reasons for the poor turnout. Eze remarked, “Of what essence is the election when we know that the ruling party will win everything; for me, it is completely a waste of time and energy.” Fabian Ugwu, another resident, simply labeled the exercise as an “affirmation of selected candidates.”

Despite their reservations, the residents appealed to political leaders and electoral bodies to intensify efforts aimed at motivating citizens to participate in future local government elections. Meanwhile, the collation of results was ongoing across the 260 electoral wards, with announcements anticipated later on Saturday.
