Obama Suggests Global Governance Would Improve Under Female Leadership

Former United States President, Barack Obama, recently articulated his conviction that global governments would achieve superior performance if women were to assume leadership roles for a period of two years. Obama shared these insights during a discussion with historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, which took place on Monday at Salem State University in Massachusetts. A video clip of his comments, initially shared by C-SPAN on Friday, has since gained significant traction online, reigniting interest in the former president's perspective on female leadership.

The former president was addressing the crucial subject of leadership and the imperative of providing younger generations with opportunities to occupy positions of influence. It was within this context that he recalled a particular thought he entertained during his tenure in the White House. He stated, “Even when I was president, I sometimes fantasised about if you put women in charge of every government for like two years and then just kind of saw, all right, how are things going?”

Obama expressed strong confidence in the potential outcomes, adding, “I have a strong belief that things would — they wouldn’t be perfect. But they’d be better. I’m confident about that. I really do.” The original report also briefly mentioned other news items: Iraq's request for exemption from a US ban on Iranian airlines; an agreement between the US and China to establish a 'communication channel' for AI incidents; and Iran's president stating the US must choose whether to end the war.

These remarks were delivered during the hour-long Salem State Series event, which drew an estimated 3,600 attendees to the university’s O’Keefe Sports Complex, with additional hundreds observing from a satellite location on campus.

It is not the first time Obama has voiced such a sentiment. In 2019, while addressing a leadership gathering in Singapore, he conveyed a similar belief that nations would experience improvements if women were to govern every country for two years.

During the Salem State dialogue, Obama also touched upon the issue of political divisions within the United States. He contended that the country's grassroots level exhibits less division than what its political landscape and media might suggest. He affirmed, “We’re not as divided as our politics or our media would indicate,” further noting that citizens nationwide continue to interact with one another respectfully.
