Top US News Outlets Drag Trump Admin to Court Over White House Ban

Major American news organizations — CNN, MS NOW, and Politico — have declared their intention to take legal action against the Trump administration. This development follows President Donald Trump's decision on Friday to bar these outlets from the White House, claiming they published "fiction or lies" concerning his team.

Their journalists reportedly faced denial of entry to the presidential complex on Saturday. In a collective statement issued on Monday, the media houses affirmed their pursuit of legal recourse, citing a need "to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports."

Shortly thereafter, Trump countered on Truth Social, asserting that the White House was not "instituting an assault on the Free Press," but rather was targeting what he termed "FAKE NEWS." It is important to note that the First Amendment of the US Constitution explicitly prohibits the government from "abridging" press freedom. Courts have historically construed this to mean that the government cannot discriminate against media organizations based on the substance of their reporting.

A joint declaration from CNN, Politico, and MS NOW further stated: "Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists' credentials because it objected to our reporting." They emphasized that, "Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public's right to independent journalism free from government interference."

When the ban was first announced last week, President Trump did not specify any particular stories or reports that led to the decision. However, he later clarified that "it's really just cumulative stories over the last few years." The American president also hinted that "there may be others to join them." Pressed by a reporter for clarification, Trump elaborated: "Others to come in terms of fake news? Well, you know, the New York Times is fake news, the Washington Post is fake news."

Notably, CNN, one of only five American news organizations part of the White House press pool for live television coverage, was initially scheduled to cover President Trump's visit to the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday and Tuesday. Nevertheless, that press pool position remained unfilled, with the conservative television channel, Real America's Voice, instead designated as the "secondary" crew for the assignment.
