Zambia: Hakainde Hichilema Sworn In for Second Term Amidst Opposition Leader's Treason Allegations

President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia officially commenced his second tenure in office on Tuesday, a development overshadowed by the incarceration of the primary opposition figure, Brian Mundubile, who finished second in the recent elections, now facing treason accusations. The electoral process on August 13 had been clouded by various claims, including voter intimidation, perceived favoritism towards the ruling party, and limitations imposed on opposition activities, factors that have reportedly cast a shadow on the democratic standing of the nation known for its copper reserves.

The inauguration ceremony at Lusaka stadium saw thousands of supporters, adorned in the distinctive red of Hichilema’s UPND party, fill the venue as he formally took his oath. The event also drew attendance from a select group of African heads of state. Official election outcomes indicated that the 64-year-old business magnate secured 60 percent of the total votes. His closest contender, former government minister Brian Mundubile, garnered 38 percent.

Following a raid by security forces on his residence on August 14, Mundubile had gone into concealment. Authorities stated their operation was aimed at a suspected militia believed to be a threat to national security. However, his political coalition, NRPUP alliance, has vehemently disputed these allegations. During the course of this operation, a former cabinet member tragically lost his life after being shot, and eleven individuals associated with Mundubile’s faction were apprehended.

Mundubile, along with his running mate Makebi Zulu, subsequently turned themselves in to law enforcement approximately two weeks after the incident. Their legal representative confirmed over the weekend that both individuals had been formally accused of treason, charges which they categorically deny. President Hichilema is widely acknowledged for successfully guiding Zambia through a significant economic recovery during his initial term, which commenced in 2021.
