Lagos-Calabar Highway Renamed Tinubu Coastal Highway
Minister of Works David Umahi says the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will now be known as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway.
“That highway is named President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway, and that’s what we have named the entire Coastal Highway. By the powers conferred on me as Minister of Works, in consultation with my Permanent Secretary, the Honourable Minister of State, directors and staff of the ministry, we decided to name that after him because of his dream for it.” - David Umahi
Supporters are saying:
“He deserves recognition” — Some supporters argue that if a leader initiates and pushes a major infrastructure project, naming it after him is a way of preserving his legacy.

The highway could transform the economy — Supporters highlight possible benefits such as easier movement of goods, tourism growth, new businesses along the coastline, and improved connectivity between southern states.

Some online commenters have described the project as a long-term infrastructure investment that could change how people travel and do business.
👎 Critics are saying:
“Why name it after a sitting president?” — Many Nigerians feel public infrastructure should carry neutral names or names of national figures after completion, rather than being linked to a serving politician.
The timing is questionable — Critics argue the focus should be on completing the highway and addressing concerns around cost, transparency, and environmental impact rather than naming.
Some people also continue to question aspects of the project, including procurement concerns, demolitions, and effects on communities along the route.
