Senator Adams Oshiomhole: Rehabilitating Criminals Defies Logic, Senate Urges Suspension

During Tuesday's plenary session on July 7, Senator Adams Oshiomhole joined his fellow lawmakers in advocating for the immediate cessation of the nation's terrorist rehabilitation initiative. This program, initiated in 2016 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, aimed to reorient and reintegrate individuals identified as 'low-risk' defectors from groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP. Its methodology involved psychological counseling, religious re-education, and vocational skill acquisition.
To date, over 2,600 ex-combatants have successfully completed the scheme at its facility located in Mallam Sidi, Gombe State. However, with the persistent rise in insecurity across various parts of Nigeria, members of the Nigerian Senate have collectively called for the discontinuation of the program.
Speaking on the matter, Senator Oshiomhole voiced strong disapproval, stating that it was illogical for the government to pardon and reintegrate individuals who have engaged in criminal acts. He emphatically declared, ''It does not make even common sense to grant pardon and rehabilitate and re-integrate criminals.''
Echoing similar concerns, Senator Abba Moro emphasized the gravity of the situation, particularly in an election year. He remarked, ''There is an urgent need for the leadership of this Senate to meet with Mr President and re-emphasize the concerns of Nigerians. Otherwise, quite frankly… it's becoming…and in an election year?!!! Anything can happen to anybody.''
Following extensive discussions, the federal lawmakers ultimately passed a motion advocating for the apprehension and prosecution of criminals, signaling a shift in approach towards national security challenges.
