Segun Sowunmi Highlights Regional Disparities in Response to Insecurity

In a thought-provoking interview on Arise News, former PDP presidential campaign spokesperson, Segun Sowunmi, drew attention to the differing reactions of Nigerians to insecurity, depending on the region affected. He noted that the recent kidnapping of school children in Oyo State elicited widespread outrage from Southerners, whereas the North's response to its own security challenges has often been muted. Sowunmi reflected on the past, stating that former President Goodluck Jonathan had recognized the importance of education in addressing insecurity, particularly in underserved areas of the country. Speaking on June 15, Sowunmi said, 'We are dealing with individuals involved in violent attacks, but the situation has not been treated with the seriousness it deserves. Governors in affected areas have not shown enough urgency, and local governments have also fallen short in their response. Even public reaction has not reflected the level of outrage expected, especially after the loss of a senior military officer. Overall, the national response does not match the gravity of the situation.' Sowunmi's comments highlight the need for a unified and effective response to insecurity across the country, regardless of regional differences.
