Brazil's Lula Rebukes Trump: America Lacks Right to Govern Other Nations

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has openly criticized the foreign policy stance of former US President Donald Trump, asserting that while Trump holds the mandate to lead the United States, he lacks the authority to dictate terms to other sovereign countries. President Lula conveyed these sentiments during an interview with Christiane Amanpour of CNN in New York, ahead of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

“President Trump was elected to be the US president. He has the right to govern. But he doesn’t have the right to govern other countries,” Lula stated unequivocally. He further emphasized that Trump “doesn’t have the right to impose his will,” advocating for mutual respect among nations regarding their sovereignty and the resolution of disagreements through diplomatic negotiations.

Lula clarified that Brazil's position was not one of seeking conflict with Washington. Instead, Brazil simply desires its national interests and sovereignty to be acknowledged and respected. “We don’t want to challenge the US; we just want to say that every country has their own sovereignty,” he explained, reiterating that the United States should refrain from enforcing its regulations on other states.

The Brazilian leader also took issue with what he perceived as Trump’s preference for conducting international relations through a display of sheer strength and economic dominance. “He has a way of governing — that I’m stronger, I’m the mightiest, I’m the richest, I can do everything, and that all the others have to obey,” Lula remarked, describing this approach as the “law of the strongest,” a philosophy he strongly disagreed with. He instead championed robust multilateral cooperation, advocating for countries to collaborate in addressing global disputes rather than allowing powerful nations to unilateral dictate outcomes.

These comments arise amidst ongoing trade disputes between Brazil and the United States. Lula confirmed Brazil’s readiness to engage in negotiations with Washington, noting that his country has not yet invoked its reciprocity law against US tariffs, a decision made while discussions are ongoing. Furthermore, the Brazilian president reiterated his firm opposition to any foreign involvement in Brazil’s domestic political landscape, particularly in the lead-up to the nation’s 2026 presidential election. Lula insisted that Brazilian citizens alone should determine their country’s political future, free from interference by the United States or any other foreign government. “The Brazilian elections [are] the interest of the Brazilian people and the US elections [are] the interest of the American people,” he affirmed.

While acknowledging concerns about potential interference, Lula noted that at the time, there was “nothing concrete” to substantiate such claims. Despite existing differences, Lula maintained that Brazil does not view itself as anti-American, underscoring the enduring significance of the diplomatic relationship between the two nations. He concluded by stating that Brazil desires dialogue, negotiations, and partnerships with the United States and other countries, but would resolutely oppose any attempts to impose decisions on it from abroad.
