On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an immediate directive to cease all trade relations with Spain, a fellow NATO ally. The President cited Spain's alleged insufficient contributions to defense spending as the reason for his decision.

Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump declared, “Spain is a wasted cause. We don’t want to do any trade business with Spain anymore by the way.” He further criticized Spain, stating, “Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate. They don’t pay.”

President Trump emphasized his resolve, instructing, “I don’t want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please, including visits.” He expressed confidence in Spain's eventual compliance, adding, “Watch them come running back. Oh they’ll come running back.”

Additionally, Trump accused Madrid of treating Secretary-General Rutte “terribly,” advising the NATO chief that he “shouldn’t carry” Spain. “I mean, you sort automatically carry [Spain] because you’re protecting an area,” the president elaborated. “So they probably figured ‘they have to protect us, right?’”

According to a report by Reuters, the office of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez indicated that it views Trump’s remarks as “business as usual,” affirming no intention to alter what it described as Spain’s “excellent” trade connections with the U.S.

Trump has consistently pressured NATO member states regarding their defense expenditures, pushing for each nation to allocate 5 percent of its total gross domestic product (GDP) towards defense. The alliance has collectively agreed to achieve a 3.5 percent target by 2035, though projections show only five of NATO’s 32 member countries reaching that goal this year.

Beyond financial contributions, Trump has also been critical of NATO members, particularly Spain, concerning their response to the U.S. conflict in Iran, asserting they have not provided adequate assistance to American efforts. In an April post on Truth Social, Trump questioned, “Has anybody looked at how badly the country of Spain is doing? Their financial numbers, despite contributing almost nothing to NATO and their military defense, are absolutely horrendous. Sad to watch!!!”
