A devastating gas explosion occurred at the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi province, northern China, resulting in the loss of at least 90 lives. The blast happened at 7:29 pm local time on Friday, May 22, while 247 workers were underground. According to reports from state news agency Xinhua, the explosion has left many trapped, with rescue efforts still ongoing as of Saturday afternoon, May 23. At least 90 people have been confirmed dead, and 123 others have been hospitalized, with four of them in critical condition. The rescue operation involves a total of 755 emergency and medical personnel. This incident is the worst mining disaster in China since 2009, when a mine blast in Heilongjiang province claimed the lives of 108 people. An injured miner, Wang Yong, who survived the blast, described the scene, saying there was a 'puff of smoke' and he smelled sulphur before seeing people choked by the smoke and eventually fainting. He managed to escape the mine after regaining consciousness. President Xi Jinping has called for 'all-out efforts' to treat the injured and has ordered thorough investigations into the incident. He emphasized the need for all regions and departments to learn from this accident and remain vigilant regarding workplace safety to prevent such catastrophic accidents. The person responsible for the company involved in the explosion has been taken into custody in accordance with the law. The incident has raised concerns about workplace safety in China's mining industry.
