Taraba Violence: Reps Task FG on Urgent Intervention After Deadly Clash

In a bid to stem the tide of violence in Taraba State, the House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to take immediate action. This call comes on the heels of a recent clash between the Karinjo and Wurkun communities in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, which resulted in the loss of at least five lives, injuries to several others, and widespread destruction of property. The motion, sponsored by Mohammed Audu, highlighted the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the affected communities. According to Audu, the violence, which erupted on May 29, 2026, has forced over 100 residents from their homes, leaving them vulnerable and without access to basic necessities like potable water and food. The lawmaker noted that the affected communities are predominantly agrarian, and the conflict has had a devastating impact on local livelihoods, with many residents losing their means of survival as farms, crops, and animals were destroyed during the clashes. The House expressed concern that the recurring violence between neighbouring communities in Taraba State threatens peace and stability, particularly in areas already exposed to criminal activities and cross-border banditry. Lawmakers warned that without decisive action, the humanitarian situation could worsen, and they called on relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace and prevent further loss of lives and property. They also urged the Federal Government and humanitarian agencies to provide emergency relief to displaced persons and support communities affected by the violence. The need for a lasting resolution of the conflict through dialogue, strengthened security presence, and sustained peace-building initiatives was also stressed. The intervention by the House is timely, given the rising number of communal conflicts across the country, which have contributed to displacement, food insecurity, and heightened humanitarian challenges in rural communities.
