A 41-year-old nursing assistant tragically lost her life on June 18 while undergoing a surgical procedure to remove harmful biopolymer fillers from her buttocks. Paula Andrea Beltran Sandoval, a resident of New York with roots in Medellin, Colombia, had developed health complications linked to the initial fillers. This prompted her journey from the United States back to Colombia for the corrective operation.

According to reports from El Espectador, Beltran Sandoval arrived in Medellin on June 15 to visit her family and prepare for the surgery. She had pre-arranged the procedure from abroad, incurring a cost of 38 million Colombian pesos, which equates to approximately £8,335. The operation was conducted within the medical tower located at the El Tesoro shopping center in the El Poblado district.

El Colombiano, citing a judicial report, stated that complications arose about one hour and ten minutes into the surgery. Doctors had already made significant progress in extracting the biopolymers when Beltran Sandoval suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest. Despite the medical team's extensive efforts, which included over 40 minutes of advanced resuscitation and electric shocks, she was ultimately pronounced dead.

Vibra.co reported preliminary findings from authorities indicating that Beltran Sandoval had no known pre-existing medical conditions or prior health history that would have flagged her as a high-risk patient for the surgery. Furthermore, a Legal Medicine report noted chest injuries on her body, consistent with the resuscitation attempts made by the medical staff during the emergency.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Antioquia health authority has launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of death, as confirmed by El Espectador. Specialists from the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences are slated to perform a comprehensive autopsy, while health officials scrutinize the clinic's records, operational licenses, and the qualifications of its personnel.

This incident marks the second fatality linked to cosmetic procedures in Medellin within recent months. El Colombiano previously reported the death of Carolina Merchan Jaramillo, 30, on February 28 at a beauty center also located in El Poblado. Amid a surge in public complaints, authorities have intensified inspections of establishments offering aesthetic services. Vibra.co further revealed that 64 such establishments have been shut down following the discovery of various irregularities. It is important to note that biopolymer injections for cosmetic enhancement are strictly forbidden under Colombian law, a prohibition also in effect in the United Kingdom due to severe risks such as necrosis, migration, and sepsis.
