Kano State Government Revamps Healthcare Infrastructure with 320 PHC Upgrades

In a significant move to bolster the healthcare system across its 44 local government areas, the Kano State Government has undertaken the rehabilitation of 320 Primary Healthcare Centres. This initiative is part of the administration's broader strategy to enhance healthcare delivery, as disclosed by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, during a press conference commemorating Democracy Day and the third anniversary of Governor Abba Yusuf's administration. Dr. Yusuf revealed that upon assuming office in 2023, the government inherited 1,236 health centres in a state of disrepair. However, through concerted efforts, 320 of these Primary Healthcare Centres have been renovated and equipped over the last three years. Furthermore, the state government, in collaboration with the federal government, has recruited additional healthcare personnel to bolster the workforce in health facilities, thereby improving service delivery. Plans are also underway to recruit approximately 7,000 more health workers, including midwives and nurses, to ensure that state health facilities are adequately staffed with qualified personnel. This recruitment drive is aimed at guaranteeing high-quality healthcare services across the state. The commissioner emphasized the state government's commitment to strengthening secondary healthcare services and highlighted the progress made in ensuring the availability of essential medicines in health facilities. Moreover, the government has reinstated training and retraining programs for healthcare workers, reinstated professionalism in the sector, and secured accreditation for various health-related courses from relevant regulatory bodies. Dr. Yusuf also mentioned that opportunities have been created for medical doctors to advance to consultant status, thereby enhancing the capacity of healthcare institutions and improving service delivery. The establishment of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control is another significant achievement of the administration, as it has substantially improved the state's capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to public health emergencies. The commissioner noted that the state has intensified its routine immunization campaign to reach all eligible children across the 44 local government areas, aiming to curb the spread of Diphtheria. He urged the public to take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease by avoiding crowded and poorly ventilated areas. Additionally, the state government has stepped up efforts to screen for Tuberculosis among residents, including pregnant women, with such screenings being provided free of charge across the state.
