Ebola Outbreak Reaches Militia-Held Territory in DR Congo, Sparks Fresh Fears

A recent development in the Democratic Republic of Congo's ongoing Ebola outbreak has raised significant concerns, as the disease has now spread to areas of South Kivu province under the control of the Rwanda-backed militia group, M23. This latest escalation of the outbreak, which has already been declared an international health emergency, is believed to have resulted in over 130 fatalities. According to a spokesperson for the M23 group, a new case of Ebola has been confirmed in the vicinity of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, which was seized by the militia in February 2025. The individual in question, a 28-year-old, unfortunately succumbed to the disease prior to the diagnosis being confirmed. The M23 spokesperson stated that the burial of the victim was carried out in accordance with strict safety protocols. It was revealed that the deceased had travelled from Kisangani in Tshopo province, an area where no cases linked to the current outbreak had previously been reported. The ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, particularly between Congolese forces and M23 rebels, has significantly complicated the response to the outbreak, as it has divided major parts of North and South Kivu provinces. Health officials have stated that the outbreak is being driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or clinical treatment available. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that the Democratic Republic of Congo is now experiencing its 17th Ebola outbreak, with nearly 600 suspected cases recorded to date. The majority of infections have been concentrated in remote areas of Ituri province, while additional cases have been confirmed in North Kivu and neighbouring regions, with one reported death. The crisis has also had an impact on other sectors, with the Congolese national football team cancelling a planned World Cup training camp in Kinshasa due to concerns surrounding the outbreak. Furthermore, certain countries have introduced stricter airport screening measures for passengers arriving from Congo, Uganda, and other affected nations, while others have imposed temporary bans on visitors from these countries. The WHO has stated that the regional risk from the outbreak remains high, although the risk of a global pandemic is currently considered to be low.
