Nigeria, China Forge New Creative Bond Through Film and Literature Pact

In a move aimed at strengthening the cultural and creative ties between Nigeria and China, a landmark agreement has been signed between the China Movie Channel and the Nigerian Television Authority. This strategic partnership, sealed at the China-Nigeria Film and Literature Symposium in Abuja, is expected to foster a robust exchange of content, facilitate co-productions in film, enhance professional training, and promote people-to-people exchanges between the two nations. The symposium, attended by high-ranking government officials, diplomats, broadcasters, filmmakers, and authors from both countries, emphasized the pivotal role of literature and film in deepening bilateral relations and fostering mutual understanding. Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, highlighted the significance of this partnership, noting it as a crucial step in advancing the Global Civilization Initiative and building a community with a shared future. He underscored the vast potential of both countries' creative industries, with China boasting over 93,000 cinema screens and producing more than 700 films annually, while Nigeria's Nollywood stands as the world's second-largest film industry, churning out over 2,000 films every year. The ambassador also touched on the flourishing literary exchanges between the two nations, with works by Nigerian authors like Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gaining popularity in China, and Chinese literary works and web novels attracting young Nigerian readers. The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Abdulkarim Ibrahim, lauded the symposium as a testament to the enduring friendship between Nigeria and China, stating that the CMC-NTA cooperation would yield opportunities for co-productions, knowledge sharing, skills development, and greater international visibility for creative talents. The Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority, Salihu Dembos, welcomed the agreement as the beginning of a promising new chapter in Nigeria-China relations, foreseeing a platform for content co-production, professional training, and technology transfer. Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Abuja Chapter, Chukwudi Eze, commended the symposium for underscoring the role of literature and film in cultural diplomacy and international relations.
