In a shocking turn of events, a well-known Mexican social media influencer, César Gastélum, was tragically shot and killed while livestreaming on social media outside a restaurant in Sinaloa state. The influencer, who had amassed nearly 600,000 followers on TikTok, was filming a video with two friends outside a fast-food restaurant in the city of Culiacán when the incident occurred. The three friends were dressed in bright orange jackets and backpacks, attire typically worn by food delivery drivers. Suddenly, a motorcycle pulled up beside them, and the driver pulled out a gun, shooting Gastélum at point-blank range. A security official in Sinaloa confirmed Gastélum's death and stated that a major security operation was underway to apprehend those responsible. The killing is the latest instance of violence in Culiacán, which has been embroiled in a fierce battle between factions of the Sinaloa cartel. Mexico's security cabinet is investigating several of Gastélum's social media posts, some of which allegedly referenced a faction of a criminal group. The cabinet is also analyzing video surveillance footage and other evidence to identify the perpetrators. Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her commitment to investigating the killing and bringing the perpetrators to justice, stating that 'the actual perpetrators, and if applicable the mastermind, must be arrested, and the reason behind this tragic homicide must be uncovered.' This incident marks the twelfth time a social media influencer has been murdered in Culiacán since the Sinaloa cartel's factions began their battle in September 2024, according to local media reports.
