A 10-year-old boy was rescued from powerful waves at Seabright Beach, Santa Cruz, California, after photographer Scott Vander Dussen spotted him struggling in the surf and alerted nearby lifeguards.

The lifeguard battled heavy waves to reach the boy and held onto him until additional rescuers arrived.

Several bystanders attempted to help but were forced back by the rough surf.

The boy was safely brought to shore and evaluated by paramedics.

The rescue took place on 25 July 2026, and the lifeguard who carried out the initial rescue was in his first season on the job.".
