Qatar Industrial City Blast: 18 Missing, 54 Hospitalized

An intense blast has rocked a manufacturing facility situated within Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City, resulting in injuries to a minimum of 54 individuals and leaving 18 others unaccounted for. The incident took place late on Sunday, June 21, in Ras Laffan, a key hub approximately 80 kilometers north of Doha, renowned for housing Qatar's primary natural gas export terminal.
The Qatari Interior Ministry, in an official announcement, confirmed the 54 injuries and stated that search and rescue operations were actively underway for the 18 missing persons. The Ministry further clarified that the explosion was due to a “technical accident” and assured the public that there was no broader threat to safety.
The affected Barzan gas facility boasts a significant operational capacity of 1.4 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd). This crucial plant is responsible for supplying pipeline gas to various local industries and plays a vital role in Qatar’s power generation infrastructure. Additionally, it possesses the capability to produce other valuable commodities such as ethane, condensate, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and sulfur, catering to both domestic consumption and international export demands. Historically, Ras Laffan had been a target for Iran during wartime, leading to its shutdown for several weeks. According to Qatari officials, the recent explosion transpired during efforts by workers to resume operations at the Barzan gas plant.
