NISO Disclaims Popular Grid Info Account on X

The Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, has reiterated its disconnection from a widely followed X account known as 'Nigeria National Grid'. In a statement issued on June 5, 2026, NISO clarified that it has no affiliation with the account and warned the public, media organisations, and other stakeholders against referencing or relying on any information provided by the account. This is not the first time NISO has made such a declaration, as a similar warning was issued on January 17, 2026. Despite this, the account remains a go-to source for real-time data on Nigeria's electricity generation, including total megawatts generated and transmitted, as well as grid collapses and partial failures. NISO's official statement read, 'The public, media organisations, and all stakeholders are strongly advised not to quote, reference, rely upon, or attribute any information, statements, claims, or opinions published on the said account to NISO. Any such content does not represent the official position, operations, or activities of the organisation.' However, the public's reaction to NISO's announcement has been largely negative, with many arguing that the unofficial account fills a critical gap in information provision that NISO itself has failed to address. Users on X have expressed their support for the 'Nigeria National Grid' account, with one user, #HolyMikel, stating, 'You slept too long, there was a vacuum and someone filled it. I am sure you will still not live up to expectations if the handle is disabled.' Another user, #AbasJoshua, urged NISO to take responsibility for providing real-time data, saying, 'We deserve to know what is happening.' NISO has directed the public to its official platforms for authentic communications, including its X account, #OFFICIALNISO_NG, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and website. The controversy surrounding the 'Nigeria National Grid' account highlights the need for accurate and timely information on Nigeria's power supply, a need that the unofficial account has been meeting despite NISO's disavowal.
