Diddy's Legal Team Exits $100M Defamation Case Over Unpaid Fees

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal representation has filed a motion to withdraw from his substantial $100 million defamation lawsuit. The high-profile rapper and entrepreneur is currently suing Courtney Burgess, Ariel Mitchell, and Nexstar Media Inc., the parent company of NewsNation.

Court documents, exclusively obtained by Page Six, reveal that Michael Tremonte, a partner at Sher Tremonte LLP, has requested to cease representing Combs. Tremonte stated that Combs “has not paid a substantial balance of attorney’s fees, costs, and expenses.” The lawyer further elaborated that the 56-year-old artist, known for hits like “Act Bad,” has been in “substantial arrears in paying Sher Tremonte’s legal fees” for more than half a year.

“For many months, while Sher Tremonte has been rendering legal services, Mr. Combs has not remitted any payment for the substantial balance of attorney’s fees, costs, and expenses incurred during Sher Tremonte’s representation of him in this matter,” Tremonte’s filing detailed. The attorney also highlighted a significant deterioration in the attorney-client relationship, attributing it to Combs’ “lack of cooperation and communication.” He noted that Combs “has declined to make himself available for timely, substantive, and direct communications about his cases for over four months,” prompting the request for the court to approve their withdrawal.

In response to the development, the Sean John founder issued a statement, asserting his decision to change legal counsel. “I made the decision to switch lawyers because I won’t let anyone take advantage of me by overcharging me and running up bills that were never approved,” Combs declared. He further clarified, “This is strictly a business matter, and any talk about unpaid fees is just part of our dispute over those unapproved charges.”

Combs initially launched the defamation lawsuit in January 2025, seeking $50 million in damages, which was later amended to $100 million. The suit alleges that Burgess fabricated claims about Combs, which Mitchell subsequently endorsed, and NewsNation then broadcast. The court documents indicate that Burgess appeared on NewsNation in the fall of 2024, following his testimony before a grand jury, to reiterate his assertion that he possessed approximately a dozen flash drives. These drives allegedly contained explicit tapes of Combs, purportedly featuring both male and female celebrities, as well as minors.

According to Combs’ complaint, Burgess “falsely claimed that he possessed videos of Mr. Combs involved in the s£xual ass@ult of celebrities and minors. Burgess repeated this false claim many times to anyone who would listen, including reporters for major news outlets (including NewsNation, which recklessly repeated and amplified his lies as if they were true).” The lawsuit also accuses Mitchell of knowing her “client’s claims were false or at a minimum was utterly reckless in disregarding their falsity.”

This legal battle follows Combs’ acquittal last July on two counts of s*x trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and on racketeering conspiracy charges.
