NCC Gets UNESCO Nod for Free Educational Platform Initiative

The Nigerian Communications Commission's (NCC) initiative to provide zero-rate access to educational platforms and content has received commendation from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). This development is aimed at bridging the digital literacy gap in Nigeria. Dr. Yinka Oyerinde, Digital Transformation Specialist at the UNESCO Office in Abuja, expressed his support for the initiative during a public consultation forum organised by the NCC. He noted that the timing of the initiative is strategic, given the precursor factors that have been put in place, including digital literacy advancement programmes. The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, represented by Dr. Ayuba Shuiabu, stated that the framework's success depends on the perspectives of those who will build, implement, and utilise it. The objective is to reduce the affordability barrier that prevents millions of Nigerian students from accessing the digital classroom. Director of ICT at the Federal Ministry of Education, Zainab Suleiman, appreciated the effort to bring together stakeholders to develop a framework for expanding access to approved educational content. She highlighted the challenges faced by learners, teachers, and institutions due to high costs, limited connectivity, and unequal access to digital learning resources. The Director of ICT at the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Mrs. Folasade Loyede, represented by Chief Programme Analyst Emmanuel Udoidiok, emphasized the importance of leveraging digital infrastructure to catalyse a digital-centric nation. The ministry aims to make quality educational resources affordable and accessible to every Nigerian, regardless of location or economic status. The consultation sought expert input on critical areas, including eligibility criteria, market dynamics, and ensuring fair competition and consumer protection.
