A number of individuals from Imo State, recently selected for enlistment into the Nigerian Army, sustained varying degrees of injuries following a road traffic accident on Saturday morning. The incident occurred while they were being transported to the Nigerian Army Depot located in Zaria, Kaduna State. SaharaReporters gathered from military sources that these victims were among the successful applicants heading to Zaria to commence their foundational military training as new recruits.

An informed military source confirmed that the journey was being supervised by Lieutenant Colonel P.D. Ngal when the unfortunate crash took place. The source stated, "The candidates from Imo State were on their way to the Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria to begin their recruit training when the accident happened this morning."

Visual evidence, including videos obtained by SaharaReporters, depicted numerous injured candidates scattered on the roadside and within vehicles. Emergency personnel and other commuters were seen making efforts to evacuate them. Many of those affected were promptly moved to nearby medical facilities to receive urgent care. At the time of this report, the precise cause of the accident and the total count of casualties had not been officially determined.

The Nigerian Army Depot in Zaria is the primary institution responsible for training newly recruited soldiers, where successful candidates undergo several months of rigorous military instruction before being formally inducted into service. Military sources further clarified that, unlike cadets at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) who are trained as officers, those destined for the Depot Nigerian Army are recruits preparing for roles as non-commissioned soldiers.

The incident carries significant implications for the injured candidates, as military regulations often disqualify recruits who suffer serious injuries either prior to or during their training on medical grounds. The source elaborated that candidates with severe fractures or other injuries that would impede their ability to complete the physically demanding training program are typically withdrawn from the recruitment process, irrespective of having successfully passed initial selection. "The Army will not train candidates with severe injuries. If a recruit sustains a serious injury, such as a broken leg, and cannot complete the training, the person may be disqualified," the source explained.
